TUSTIN, Calif., Jan. 18, 2023Specright, the leader in Specification Management software, announced today it has extended its partnership with Michigan State University's (MSU) School of Packaging, now jointly developing an industry short course for executives working within the packaging and supply chain industries.

In October, Specright committed to a $500,000 donation to MSU’s School of Packaging. The sponsorship is being used to refresh the school’s computer lab so MSU packaging students can better prepare for the workforce with hands-on technology training.

Now in development, the industry short course will explore how packaging professionals can leverage specification data through analytics and digital tools to create actionable business outcomes. The course will be offered virtually and in-person and will be jointly developed and taught by MSU professors and Specright personnel. Executive attendees will learn how specification data and a spec-first approach can impact sustainability reporting, product quality, procurement and speed to market for new product development. As part of the course, Specright will share learnings from its work with companies like Colgate-Palmolive and Johnson & Johnson.

“Today’s packaging and supply chain professionals have a lot to think about related to sustainability, product development, quality and more,” said Matthew Wright, Specright’s founder & CEO. “These professionals, though, have a treasure trove of unused data that when digitized, can significantly impact business outcomes for the better. We’re thrilled to be able to extend our partnership and work together with MSU on this new course.”

For MSU graduates and other packaging professionals who have been in the workforce for years or even decades, they’ve seen the industry evolve throughout the years, particularly as it relates to the use of technology. Through this course, packaging and supply chain executives can quickly up-level their packaging technology skills.

“MSU is dedicated to delivering the real world expertise to enable those within the packaging and supply chain industry to thrive in their careers and truly move the needle in sustainable packaging,” said Matt Daum, director and professor, Michigan State University School of Packaging. “We look forward to the launch of this co-developed course with Specright and we invite MSU alumni and industry professionals to take advantage of this valuable opportunity to uplevel their cost savings and sustainability initiatives through a data-led mindset.”

Daum is speaking this week at Specright’s Specification Management Summit, taking place Jan. 16-18 in Nashville, on why MSU is going all-in on a spec-first approach in the classroom.
