As shared on LinkedIn.

Every Earth Day, I’m reminded of my time spent living in New York City in the early 90s. I would sit on the lower west side and watch them take barges of trash out to the ocean to be dumped. As a young packaging salesman, I knew some of those barges contained my mistakes. Making the wrong thing for a customer meant throwing boxes in a landfill. And it pained me to know I was contributing to the problem.

While this seems unimaginable now, I know it still happens today – only now it really is avoidable.

With all the talk around sustainability, we talk less about the mistakes that lead to waste.

And while there is no silver bullet for sustainability, I believe the fastest way every company can be sustainable today is by making things right the first time.

The reality is, material innovation is hard. You have to have the same performance, understand end of life, adjust your supply chains – the list goes on. And don’t get me wrong – this is important work and work we should all be doing – but it takes time.

So today, I want you to think about this: what if we all made things right the first time?

What if we killed allowable waste for good? It’s a simple concept with a huge impact. I know why this doesn’t happen today – in fact, I wrote a book about it. It’s because everyone is operating off different information when it comes to making products and packaging. And the miscommunications that arise from this lack of standardized specification data leads to mistakes that lead to waste.

But with technology like Specright, we’re reimaging a world without waste. Where products and packaging are made right every time.

If you get the spec right, the rest follows. It’s better for business, better for people and better for the planet. It’s a simple concept, but it requires a change in paradigm – that sustainability isn’t just about changing our products and packaging but our approach to making them. I’m so proud of the work we’re doing to empower people and companies with the data they need to make amazing, sustainable things. It’s why we’ve invested so much in our partnerships and integrations with TOPS and Trayak, making it easier to optimize logistics and perform Life Cycle Assessments.

At Specright, our vision is to live in a world without waste. And we won’t get there alone.

So this earth day, I want to personally thank you for being on this journey with us, of getting the specs right – and your products and packaging right – every single time. Read more about our commitment to Sustainability, and a world without waste, here.
